McHenry Sportsman’s Club Newsletter (2009 Newsletter)

CLUB STRUCTURE - McHenry Sportsmen's Club is a not-for-profit corporation that is managed by a Board of Directors elected from the Club membership. Elections are held at the December Club meeting (December 5th at 5PM this year). To properly manage the Club we need a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Trap Chairman, and five Directors. The Board meets once a month and members are welcome to attend -- should attend! Board meetings are where key Club operating and spending decisions are made. Get involved! - add your name to the nomination board in the clubhouse.

The Club is operated by the members on a voluntary basis. Club members, by law, cannot be paid employees. The only people paid by the Club are the trap kids. All of the work you see being done to improve the clubhouse, maintain the grounds and equipment, and operate the Club day-to-day is voluntary and unpaid. There is a lot of work going on behind the scene to throw those targets you like to shoot. The only way we can keep shooting costs down is to pitch in and help! Right now we have 310 members, but only about 25 members are doing all the work. Does not seem quite right, does it? It's up to you, the members, to make the Club what you want it to be.

COUPON POLICY CHANGE - Starting January 1, 2010 Shooting Passes (also called coupons, or tickets), or Youth Cards may only be used by current members to pay for a round. Non-members cannot use Shooting Passes or Youth Cards to pay for a round.

TRAP OPERATIONS - The Club has thrown 13,746 practice rounds thru October which is 20% ahead of 2008. Thru October we have consumed about 300,000 targets costing about $20,000.

  • A new Pat Trap was purchased in March so we now have 5 Pat Traps which has made operations more consistent and efficient.
  • The Club has purchased a set of Canterbury Wireless Speakers to replace one of the wired sets that is on its last legs. If the wireless speakers work well we would expect to purchase more of them in the future.
  • The top of Trap #1 opens up to make it easier to load and maintain the trap. If the method used open the top proves out over the winter we would expect to modify the rest of the traps houses in 2010.
  • A new deck that will make accessing the traps easier and safer is under construction.

SPORTING CLAYS TRAPS - During the Club Picnic we experimented with 3 Sporting Clay style traps that allow us to present many different types of targets (in-coming, crossing, straight up, etc.) The response was good and the Board is planning to rent 3 of these traps in 2010 to provide alternative target presentations. Thanks to Butch Ackerman for introducing us to the possibilities these traps offer.

HANGOVER SHOOT - Don't forget the Hangover Shoot January 1st starting at 11AM. Bring a dish to pass. Don't believe it? You better. We have a good crowd, a lot of good food and fun.

INTERCLUB JACK RABBIT - Every Sunday starting Jan 3rd for 10 weeks we go to a different club for a shoot. Daily prizes, club team prizes, etc. Come on out and support your club. Information at www.winterjackrabbit.com

WINTER HOURS - December 1 thru February 28 the operating hours will be 11AM-4PM. If the Club was open at 10AM during Winter Hours would you take advantage of starting earlier? Please mark the appropriate Winter Hours box on the enclosed application form.
